Surprisingly, GoDaddy has one of the most customizable VPS hosting service around: you can choose between several Windows and Linux operating systems for your server, as well as choosing your preferred control panel (i.e. cPanel). For a former domain registrar they have done pretty well in the VPS arena.
Their VPS plans are priced around the same as other VPS hosts, but with these coupons, you can get great discounts off of their prices.
Tips for Saving:
- Lock in savings up front – Godaddy automatically gives you a discount for VPS plans that are 1 year or longer. Hosting companies always give the deepest discounts up front. You can combine the coupon codes above with the already discounted prices GoDaddy will offer you for purchasing plans of one year or longer for even better savings.
- No need to purchase extra encryption – Godaddy gives you a free secure socket layer certificate with all VPS plans. Don’t pay for something you were going to get for free anyway! You also get free Google Adwords, Bing Ads, and Facebook Advertising credit with all VPS plans.
Features of GoDaddy’s Linux Hosting Plans
Once you’ve selected your base plan you can then customize your server based on your business’ needs. If you think you will be getting a huge amount of traffic or you will be serving video or other large files then you can purchase additional bandwidth at $16.99/mo per terabyte. You can choose to have no control panel pre-installed and use your own, or you can have GoDaddy install cPanel and WHM Unlimited for you.
What is WHM Unlimited?
WHM is Web Host Manager and it gives you backend access to cPanel, so that you can create and manage multiple cPanels if you’d like. You might be interested in this if you intend to resell space on your VPS and want each of your clients to have their own cPanel. Even if you only intend to host your own site giving each of them their own cPanel creates an extra security layer as even if a hacker gets into one site it won’t be easy for them to access all the other ones. You are also only able to have one SSL certificate per cPanel, so if you have multiple sites that need an SSL certificate then you will need multiple instances of cPanel. Google has recently announced that it will be taking SSL certificates into account as a ranking signal, so you might want to have one. We have coupons for purchasing SSL certificates from GoDaddy here.
Standard features on all GoDaddy Linux Virtual Private Servers
- cPanel, although as mentioned above you can opt out of it. It’s the most commonly used hosting platform in the world though, most admins and more advanced users are familiar with it.
- Self-managed, managed, and fully managed options available (more on that below)
- DDos mitigation using TippingPoint
- Server root access
- Quick server set up turnarounds
- Ability to upgrade wihthout having to re-provision
- MySQL database software
- Choice of CentOS 6, Fedora 20 & 22, Ubuntu, Windows 2008 & 2012
- Automated patching on managed and fully managed plans
- Automated updates to OS, LAMP, and apps on managed and fully managed plans
- Free SSL Certificate (for first year, renews at regular price for subsequent years typically $99/year)
- CDN and Web Application Firewall included with managed and fully managed plans
Now let’s talk about backups, if you are running your own server it’s extremely important to have them. On the self-managed plan, GoDaddy takes a backup of your server every 10 days and it will cost you extra if you ever need to have a backup restored. I’m not sure exactly how much, although it looks like for an extra $7.99/month you can pay for a backup service. You can always run backups yourself, especially if you don’t feel like paying or you’d like to have access to more snapshots. It wasn’t abundantly clear but I’m pretty sure once the 10 days are up and they take a new snapshot of your server the old one is deleted, so if you need a backup from two weeks ago you would be out of luck. With the managed and fully managed plans it looks like you can take a snapshot whenever you like, however they still only store one at a time.
All of the VPS server plans include 5,000 SMTP relays (you can purchase more if you need), and the managed and fully managed plans include site migrations if you like. You get one dedicated IP address on the self-managed plan, and three with both the managed and fully managed plans. They also get access to more advanced customer service help and SiteLock malware protection.
Do I need VPS Hosting?
VPS hosting is extremely customizable and typically outperforms shared hosting by a large margin, however it is a much more advanced product and you will need a fair amount of server administration knowledge or be able to hire somebody who does! Sometimes your website or business grows beyond the needs of a shared hosting plan, perhaps you get large volumes of traffic on a daily basis or are running custom web applications and you need root access to properly configure the server. Some shared hosting servers will be running older versions of PHP or Apache, and you might need the most up to date version. With a VPS you have complete control over all of that at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated server. You might also need VPS if you are hosting websites for clients and you want them to have their own cPanel access.
